The newest CS2 container is the Sealed Dead Hand Terminal, released March 11, 2026. It gives you a specific offer at a fixed price, and you can accept or reject it. The newest case that still needs a key is the Fever Case (March 31, 2025). As of October 22, 2026 we found no announcement of another case or Terminal from Valve.
What is the newest CS2 case in October 2026?
It depends on what you count as a case, because Valve now ships new items in several formats.

| Format | Newest example | Released | Key needed? | Item shown first? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terminal | Sealed Dead Hand Terminal | Mar 11, 2026 | No | Yes, one offer at a time |
| Armory key case | Fever Case | Mar 31, 2025 | Yes | No |
| Classic weekly-drop case | Kilowatt Case | Feb 2024 | Yes | No |
| Armory collection | Arabesque and Spy Tech | Jul 8, 2026 | No | No (random within a collection) |
| Major shop sticker | IEM Cologne 2026 Major Shop | May 22, 2026 | No | Yes (you pick the sticker) |
Genesis, introduced on September 17, 2025, was the first Sealed Terminal, so Dead Hand is the second. Dead Hand and Genesis arrived through weekly drops, while Fever came through the Armory. Some trackers date Dead Hand to March 12 because of time zones.
The July 2026 skins are a different thing again. Arabesque and Spy Tech are Armory weapon collections with 17 skins each, released with Premier Season 5 on 8 July 2026. There is no container to unseal and no key to buy.
What comes next is unknown. Valve opened a Workshop call on July 16, 2026 that asks for a Fairy Tales weapon collection, but it has not said whether those designs will ship through the Armory, a Terminal or a case. Release gaps used to work as a rough countdown. They no longer do.
How does a classic CS2 case work?
A classic case is a blind box. You get it as a drop or buy it on the market, then pay for a key and receive one random item you could not see in advance. The key costs $2.49 in recent coverage, but check the price on Steam before buying.

The odds are fixed and public. Each grade from Mil-Spec to Covert is five times rarer than the one below, and knives and gloves sit above Covert.
| Result | Chance per opening |
|---|---|
| Mil-Spec | 79.92% |
| Restricted | 15.98% |
| Classified | 3.20% |
| Covert | 0.64% |
| Knife or gloves | 0.26% |
Roughly four in five openings land on the lowest grade, and nothing is refunded if the item is worth less than the key. That is the house edge in plain terms: over many openings you get back less than you spend, and any single opening can return far less than the case and key cost.
How does a CS2 Terminal work, and is it better than a case?
A Terminal reverses the order of a case: you unseal it for free, see a specific skin with a price, and decide whether to buy it. Here is how bo3.gg's Genesis walkthrough describes the mechanic, which Dead Hand follows:
- Offers: up to five sequential offers, each with a specific skin, wear, float, StatTrak status and a Steam Wallet price. They appear one at a time.
- Time limit: unsealing starts a 72-hour clock.
- Passing: decline all five and the Terminal disappears, with no refund and no consolation drop.
- Trade lock: accepting comes with a seven-day trade restriction.
- Where it comes from: Terminals drop in the weekly care package for players with Prime Status. You can also buy a sealed one on the Steam Community Market.
Key takeaway: A Terminal removes the blind luck over which skin you get, not the cost. The offer price factors in Steam market price, demand and rarity, so an offer is not a discount. Check the same skin, wear and float on the Steam Community Market before you accept.
Dead Hand is the bigger of the two. It includes 17 weapon skins and 22 pairs of gloves, the first new gloves in CS2 since December 2020. Third-party trackers report that all 17 weapon skins can drop StatTrak and the gloves cannot. Genesis has no knives or gloves.
So is a Terminal better than a case? It is different. If you want one particular skin, seeing the offer first beats a blind pull. But it is not a cheaper route to skins, and declining everything leaves you with nothing.
How does the Armory Pass work without cases or keys?
The Armory is a third route: you buy a pass, earn credits (also called stars) from the XP you generate by playing, and spend them on items.
| Armory detail | Figure (reported, October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Pass price | $15.99 USD, Prime Status required |
| Credits per pass | 40, earned by playing |
| Active passes at once | Up to 5 |
| Random skin from a collection | 4 credits |
| Case (Armory case) | 2 credits, key still needed |
For collection pulls you pick the collection, not the skin. Both July collections are credit-redemption collections, so they use no case keys and have no knife or glove roll. Each has two Covert skins, so Covert is the best you can pull. None of them has a StatTrak version. On July 8, Valve also rotated out the Train 2025 and Sport & Field weapon collections.
No key is involved, but the pull is still random and can return less value than it cost. The $15.99 price comes from third-party guides rather than Valve, and it appears in the game and at checkout, so confirm it before you buy. If you want one specific skin, buying it directly is the only way to be sure of getting it.
Is Valve moving away from random containers?
Valve has not explained the shift, so treat any reason as informed speculation. What you can observe is a steady move toward showing you the item before you pay.
- No new key case has been released since Fever in March 2025. Two Terminals have followed.
- For the IEM Cologne Major on May 22, 2026, Valve dropped sticker capsules and let fans use tokens to buy individual stickers. Prices are based on relative demand. HLTV's report has the details.
- Dot Esports says this pricing system was first piloted with the Genesis and Dead Hand Terminals. It adds that the move also reduces Valve's exposure to loot box regulation. Dot Esports' Major Shop explainer covers the shop.
- On February 25, 2026, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a civil action against Valve. The office's press release says Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 enable gambling by enticing users to pay for the chance to win a rare virtual item.
Valve disputes this. It moved to dismiss the suit in May 2026, and its lawyers argue loot boxes are more like baseball cards, comic book grab bags and cereal toys. PC Gamer covered the filing. We found no report of a ruling as of late October 2026. Whether the lawsuit influenced Valve's product changes is unconfirmed.
What does this mean for case drops and prices?
The weekly drop pool is small, and Valve now mixes Terminals in with classic cases. As of the latest tracker data, it holds the Kilowatt Case, Revolution Case and Dreams & Nightmares Case, alongside the Sealed Dead Hand Terminal and Sealed Genesis Terminal.
| Container | In weekly drop pool? | Key needed? | Released |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sealed Dead Hand Terminal | Yes | No | Mar 2026 |
| Sealed Genesis Terminal | Yes | No | Sep 2025 |
| Kilowatt Case | Yes | Yes | Feb 2024 |
| Revolution Case | Yes | Yes | Feb 2023 |
| Dreams & Nightmares Case | Yes | Yes | Jan 2022 |
Cases are not banned. Existing containers can still be bought, traded and opened after their original distribution ends. Cases that no longer drop have a supply that stops growing, which can support prices, but that is a tendency, not a promise. Prices can fall, and Valve could change the rules again. Nothing here is investment advice.
How does this compare with opening cases on CSDROP?
CSDROP is a separate case-opening site for adults, not affiliated with Valve or Steam. You deposit real money and open cases, and you can lose it. Over many openings the expected return is lower than what you pay, and no site can promise a profit.
What you can check before you play:
- Known pools: each case on CSDROP's case list shows its item pool and drop rates before you open it. Cases open from your balance, so no key is needed.
- Provably fair: results use HMAC-SHA256 from a server seed (shown hashed before play), your client seed and a nonce, and you can verify them from the game history. See the provably fair page. This shows a roll was not tampered with. It does not change the odds or the house edge.
- Other modes: case battles and the upgrader carry the same risk. Variance is real, and losing streaks happen.
- No-deposit start: new accounts get free cases without a deposit, though you may first need to verify your email or link Discord or Steam. The free case page explains how it works.
Note: CSDROP is for adults only (18+, or the age of majority in your country if higher). Set a budget before you start, only spend what you can afford to lose, and stop when it is gone. If it stops being fun, take a break and look for support in your country.
FAQ
What is the newest CS2 case?
The newest container is the Sealed Dead Hand Terminal (March 11, 2026). The newest key case is the Fever Case (March 31, 2025), and the newest classic case in the weekly drop pool is the Kilowatt Case (February 2024). The newest skins are the Armory's Arabesque and Spy Tech collections (July 8, 2026), which come with no case at all.
Do I need a key to open a Terminal?
No. Unsealing a Terminal is free, and you only pay if you accept one of its offers. If you decline all five offers or let the 72-hour timer run out, you receive nothing and the Terminal is gone.
When is the next CS2 case coming out?
We found no announcement from Valve as of October 22, 2026. No key case has been released since March 2025, and Valve has since added two Terminals and moved Major stickers to a direct-purchase shop. Treat any release date that does not come from Valve as a rumor.
Is the Armory Pass worth $15.99?
It depends on how much you play, since credits come from XP. One pass gives up to 40 credits, and a collection pull costs 4. The result is random within the collection, so it is not a reliable way to get a specific skin and should not be treated as a way to make money. Confirm the price in the in-game store.
Is a Terminal better than a normal case?
It is a different trade-off. A Terminal lets you see the exact skin, wear and price before paying, but the price is generated from market data and demand, so it is not a discount. A case costs a key, gives a random item and refunds nothing. Neither format guarantees you get back what you spend.
Are older cases still worth opening?
They work as before: fixed odds, with a key to buy. The expected return is still below what you pay, so open them as entertainment, not as a way to earn money.
