Free CS2 Cases: How Free Case Opening Works, What You Can Actually Win and How to Avoid Scams

Two ways to get free CS2 cases: the weekly Care Package in-game, or promo cases on opening sites. What each costs, what the odds say, and how to spot scams.

You can get free CS2 cases two ways. In-game, a Prime account earns one Weekly Care Package per week, and you pick two of its four rewards. On case opening sites, a "free case" is a promotional opening with its own unlock and withdrawal terms. Neither is a profit machine: the in-game case still needs a $2.49 key to open. The CSDROP free case page shows what is live on the site right now.

How do you get free CS2 cases in-game?

Through the Weekly Care Package, and only with Prime Status. You earn it by raising your profile rank for the first time in a weekly period. It then offers four random rewards, and you redeem two. Prime is a one-time $14.99 package on Steam, so "free" assumes you already own it. Without Prime you get no weekly drop.

The offers can include weapon cases, terminals, skins, graffiti and tools. The mix changes from package to package, so check what you are offered before you pick. The weekly reset is Tuesday at 8:00 PM Central Time, which is 1:00 AM UTC on Wednesday while daylight saving applies, and 2:00 AM UTC otherwise. A package you skip does not carry over.

What is the catch with a free case?

The case is free, but opening it is not. A key costs $2.49 in the in-game store (US pricing). Since October 2019, keys bought in-game cannot leave the purchasing account, so they can only open a case.

That makes a Care Package case cost about $2.49 to open. The alternative is to sell the case on the Steam Community Market and skip the key. Items from the package can be sold there, with the exception of the Chicken Egg below.

Should you pick the Chicken Egg?

Usually not, if you want a case. Since the Rush Hour update of 22 September 2026, the package can offer a Chicken Egg as one of its four items. Claiming it costs both of your picks, and the egg cannot be traded or sold. It is not in every package.

Valve's Rush Hour patch notes say nothing about pets. The only chicken line is that chickens now take damage from the Zeus. If you want something you can sell or trade, take the case or skin instead.

What is a free case on a CS2 case opening site?

On an opening site, a free case is a virtual container you open without paying, funded by the platform as a signup bonus or daily reward. What matters is whether the prize is a real item credited to you or just a number on a screen.

Type Real item? Cost to you Main catch
Weekly Care Package Yes, in your Steam inventory Prime ($14.99 once) A $2.49 key to open the case
Signup free case Yes, credited to the site balance Nothing to open Withdrawal terms vary by site
Daily free case Yes, usually small Nothing to open Unlocked by level or other conditions
Simulator No Nothing Nothing can be withdrawn

A simulator is good practice for seeing how rarities fall, but you cannot withdraw anything from it.

How do daily free cases work on CSDROP?

On CSDROP, daily free cases reset every 24 hours and unlock by level, with deposit and wager conditions. Other sites set their own gates, so before you count on a daily case, check:

Treat a daily case as a small bonus for coming back, not a payout.

What can you realistically win from a free case?

Mostly cheap skins. Valve's published odds for its own weapon cases are the best reference point. Valve has disclosed them since 2017, after China required publishers to disclose loot-box odds.

Kukri Knife, the kind of gold-tier item that drops 0.26% of the time from a Valve weapon case
Rarity Colour Official odds Roughly 1 in
Mil-Spec Blue 79.92% 1.25
Restricted Purple 15.98% 6
Classified Pink 3.20% 31
Covert Red 0.64% 156
Knife or gloves Gold 0.26% 385

The same distribution applies to every standard weapon case in the game. The full breakdown is in Valve's official odds. These are probabilities, not a schedule. You could open 1,000 cases without getting a single knife.

Site-built cases are a different product. Operators set their own item pools, prices and drop tables, so Valve's table does not apply to them. A good site shows the full item pool and drop rates before you open anything, and every CSDROP case page does this.

How big is the house edge on Valve cases?

It is large. On one tracker's October 2026 snapshot, the Prisma 2 Case cost $0.86 plus a $2.49 key, $3.35 in total, with an expected value of $1.56 and an expected return of -53%. A second tracker put the same case near -56% on its own prices. Case prices move daily, and the figures are before Steam's selling fees.

The knife maths is just as blunt. At 0.26%, the average wait is about 385 openings, roughly $958 in keys alone. More than a third of players who open 385 cases still get no knife. That leaves out the cost of the cases themselves.

Key takeaway: Expect to get back roughly half of what you spend on Valve cases, on average. A free case changes what you pay, not the odds.

Do free cases come with wagering or deposit requirements?

Often, yes. Claiming is free, but cashing out can come with conditions, and those conditions are where most disappointment happens. On CSDROP:

  1. Welcome offer: you choose before your first deposit between a 200% deposit bonus with a wagering requirement and a 10% deposit bonus with no wagering. The exact terms are shown before you claim.
  2. Free cases at signup: new accounts get free cases with no deposit needed, plus a 7-day challenge. You may first have to verify your email or link Discord or Steam.
  3. Daily cases: they unlock by level, with deposit and wager conditions.
  4. Verification: KYC may be requested before some withdrawals or to raise limits.

On any site, read the terms for expiry dates and maximum cashouts before you open a bonus case. If the terms are hard to find, treat that as a warning sign. Don't try to farm signup cases with extra accounts: CSDROP allows one account per person.

How do you avoid free case scams?

Treat any "free" offer that asks for something valuable in return as a red flag. Sign in only through Steam's own sign-in page. Watch for:

What does provably fair actually prove?

It proves a result was not changed after you played. On CSDROP, case openings and games use HMAC-SHA256 built from a server seed (shown hashed before play), your client seed and a nonce, and you can verify results from the game history. For case battles, the client seed comes from a future EOS blockchain block ID. The method is explained on the provably fair page. It does not change the odds or remove the house edge.

How does the CSDROP free case work?

CSDROP's free routes are the signup free cases, the daily free cases, the rakeback that grows with your level, and the weekly bonus (from level 5) and monthly bonus (from level 20). Terms change with promotions, so check the free case page for what applies today. Items you win are credited to your balance at market value. Cases open from the balance, so no Steam key is involved.

Before opening, browse all CSDROP cases and compare each case's item pool and drop rates. Skins can be bought on the marketplace and sent to Steam through SkinsBack, and crypto can be withdrawn to an external wallet. Steam trade holds can delay skin withdrawals.

Note: CSDROP is for adults only (18+, or the age of majority in your country if higher) and involves real money. Set a budget, never chase losses, and stop if it stops being fun. A free case is a low-stakes way to try a site, not income.

FAQ

Do I need Prime to get free cases in CS2?

Yes, for the in-game route. Only Prime accounts receive the Weekly Care Package, and Prime is a one-time $14.99 upgrade on the US Steam store as of October 2026. Case opening sites do not require Prime, but their free cases have their own terms.

Is there a daily free case in CS2?

Not in the game itself, where the drop is weekly. Daily free cases come from case opening sites. On CSDROP they reset every 24 hours and unlock by level, with deposit and wager conditions.

Are free case sites legit?

Some are and some are not. Look for provably fair verification you can test yourself, visible item pools and drop rates, clear bonus terms, and no requests for your Steam password or Guard code. Also check who operates the site and whether it states age limits and restricted territories.

Do I have to deposit to use a free case?

Opening a signup free case on CSDROP needs no deposit, though you may first have to verify your email or link Discord or Steam. Daily free cases come with deposit and wager conditions. Withdrawals can involve KYC, so read the terms before you open anything.

Can I sell the items from my Weekly Care Package?

Mostly yes. Cases, skins and other tradable rewards can be sold on the Steam Community Market. The Chicken Egg cannot be traded or sold.

Are free cases rigged against you?

On a provably fair site you can verify that a result was not changed after you played. That does not remove the house edge, and no case guarantees a prize. For Valve cases, trackers show an average return of roughly half your spend.
