Five cases can drop a Butterfly Knife in CS2: Operation Breakout Weapon Case, Spectrum Case, Spectrum 2 Case, Operation Riptide Case and Dreams & Nightmares Case. Any knife or glove comes at 0.26% (about 1 in 385). In four of the five cases the Butterfly shares the pool with four other knife models, so a Butterfly specifically is closer to 1 in 1,900.
Quick answer: the five cases that can drop a Butterfly Knife
There are only five Butterfly Knife cases in CS2, and none has been added since Dreams & Nightmares in 2022. Here is what sets them apart:
- Operation Breakout Weapon Case (2014): the only case whose rare pool is a single knife model, the Butterfly Knife. Classic finishes.
- Spectrum Case and Spectrum 2 Case: the same five knife models and the same Chroma finishes; only the regular weapon skins differ.
- Operation Riptide Case and Dreams & Nightmares Case: Dreams & Nightmares reused the Riptide rare pool, so both give the same knife finishes. Gamma-era finishes.
If you are searching for cases with a Butterfly Knife in a hurry, that is the whole list. The rest of this guide is about what you actually get from each one, and what it costs.
Case by case: knife models and finishes
Operation Breakout Weapon Case
Breakout introduced the first Butterfly Knives in July 2014. Every knife in the pool is a Butterfly, and there are 13 finishes, including Fade, Slaughter and Vanilla.

The pool mixes premium and budget finishes:
- Premium: Fade, Crimson Web, Case Hardened, Slaughter
- Mid and budget: Blue Steel, Boreal Forest, Forest DDPAT, plus Safari Mesh, Scorched, Urban Masked, Stained, Night and Vanilla
Breakout also has the best odds of any Butterfly at all, because nothing else can drop.
Spectrum and Spectrum 2
These two cases hold five knife models: Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman and Shadow Daggers. The Butterfly finishes come from the Chroma family: Doppler, Marble Fade, Tiger Tooth, Damascus Steel, Rust Coat and Ultraviolet.
The Doppler finish is where the jackpots sit. Its phases are Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4, plus the rare Ruby, Sapphire and Black Pearl. Damascus Steel is the budget end of this pool.
Operation Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares
Both cases hold the same 30 rare knives: six finishes each on Bowie, Butterfly, Falchion, Huntsman and Shadow Daggers. The Butterfly finishes are Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Freehand and Bright Water.
Wiki pages for the finishes: Gamma Doppler Emerald, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Bright Water and Freehand. Browse the full model at the Butterfly Knife wiki page.
Dreams & Nightmares is the one you can still find dropping, since it is listed among the current weapon cases in the active drop pool.
Real odds: 0.26% for any knife, then it depends on the pool
Valve's published tiers apply to all five cases: Mil-Spec 79.92%, Restricted 15.98%, Classified 3.20%, Covert 0.64% and a rare special item 0.26%. Within a tier, every item is equally likely. So the maths is simple:

| Case | Butterfly finishes in pool | Rare pool size | Any Butterfly | Roughly 1 in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Operation Breakout | 13 | 13 knives | 0.26% | 385 |
| Spectrum | 6 | 30 knives | 0.052% | 1,925 |
| Spectrum 2 | 6 | 30 knives | 0.052% | 1,925 |
| Operation Riptide | 6 | 30 knives | 0.052% | 1,925 |
| Dreams & Nightmares | 6 | 30 knives | 0.052% | 1,925 |
A specific finish is far rarer. In a 30-knife pool, each specific knife is 0.0087%, about 1 in 11,500. In Breakout, one named finish is roughly 0.02%, or 1 in 5,000. That is before float, StatTrak (about 10% of drops) or Doppler phase enter the picture.
One more honest point: "1 in 1,925" is an average, not a schedule. If you open exactly that many cases, the chance you have hit at least one Butterfly is only about 63%. About 37% of people in that spot are still empty-handed. Some hit it on the first try, and some never do.
Price vs pool: cheapest way in vs classic finishes
Case and key prices move daily. From recent market snapshots, the cost to open one of each case looks like this:
| Case | Approx. cost per opening (case + $2.49 key) | Expected openings per Butterfly | Expected spend per Butterfly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreams & Nightmares | ~$3.58 | ~1,925 | ~$6,900 |
| Spectrum 2 | ~$5.04 | ~1,925 | ~$9,700 |
| Spectrum | ~$5.81 | ~1,925 | ~$11,200 |
| Operation Breakout | ~$9.76 | ~385 | ~$3,800 |
| Operation Riptide | ~$10.82 | ~1,925 | ~$20,800 |
The opening costs come from SteamDB's snapshot, which lists Dreams & Nightmares at $3.58 with a key and Operation Breakout at $9.76, with Spectrum 2 at $2.55 and Spectrum at $3.32 for the case alone. Riptide comes from a separate tracker that puts an opening at about $10.82. The last two columns are my arithmetic on Valve's odds, not a prediction.
What that tells you:
- Cheapest per try: Dreams & Nightmares. It is also the shallowest bet, because the Butterfly is one of five models.
- Cheapest per expected Butterfly: Breakout. It costs the most per opening, but you are about five times more likely to get a Butterfly. The catch is that many of its 13 finishes are camo or plain finishes.
- Best jackpots: the gem-tier finishes. Doppler Ruby Factory New is around $11,240, with Gamma Doppler Emerald at roughly $9,260. Those are the rare ends of already rare pools. Do not budget around them.
- Worst value: Riptide. It costs about as much as Breakout per opening, but the pool is five times more diluted.
Buying the knife directly vs chasing it
Here is the honest comparison. After Valve's knife trade-up update, a Field-Tested Butterfly Knife | Safari Mesh starts around $410. SteamDB lists the cheapest Butterfly finish as Safari Mesh at about $406, and the most expensive as Black Pearl at over $11,000.
Compare that with the expected spend in the table above. Even on the best-odds case, chasing a Butterfly averages several thousand dollars. On the worst pools it is tens of thousands. Some of that comes back through the other skins you unbox, but not most of it. For Riptide, one tracker estimates an average opening returns about $4.84 in items. That is against a cost of about $10.82.
So if you want a specific Butterfly and have the budget, buying it is cheaper and certain. That's also the view in our guide on buying skins vs opening cases. If money is tight, see the cheapest knives in CS2.
Why open cases at all, then? Because it is entertainment: the reel, the tension, a small chance of a big outcome. Treat the spend as the price of that entertainment, not as an investment. Nobody can promise you a Butterfly.
Other knife cases: Karambit, gloves, Kukri
Not set on a Butterfly? Other rare pools may fit better:
- Karambit: it sits in many Chroma- and Gamma-era cases, usually alongside Bayonet, Flip, Gut and M9 Bayonet. Pool sizes and prices differ from the Butterfly cases, so check each pool.
- Kukri: the Kilowatt Case introduced the Kukri Knife in February 2024, and the Gallery Case belongs to the same Kukri group.
- Gloves: you need cases such as Clutch or Glove Case.
- Shattered Web-style knives: Fever Case includes Shattered Web knives in Chroma finishes.

Provably fair and responsible play
On CSDROP, cases run on their own published odds. Every result is provably fair, so you can verify that it was not altered after you opened. Provably fair proves the roll was honest. It does not remove the house edge, and it does not make a win more likely. Always read the odds and item pool shown on a case page before you pay.
CSDROP is for players aged 18+. Set a budget before you start and never play with money you need. If it stops being fun, take a break.

FAQ
Which CS2 cases have a Butterfly Knife?
Operation Breakout Weapon Case, Spectrum Case, Spectrum 2 Case, Operation Riptide Case and Dreams & Nightmares Case. No other case can drop one.
What are the odds of unboxing a Butterfly Knife?
A knife or glove comes at 0.26%, about 1 in 385. In Breakout every knife is a Butterfly, so that is also your Butterfly chance. In the other four cases a Butterfly is 6 of 30 knives, so about 0.052%, or roughly 1 in 1,925.
Which case is best for a Butterfly Knife?
Breakout has the best odds of any Butterfly, and its finishes are classic. Spectrum and Spectrum 2 have the Chroma finishes such as Doppler and Marble Fade. Riptide and Dreams & Nightmares have the Gamma finishes. Dreams & Nightmares is the cheapest per try.
Is it cheaper to buy a Butterfly Knife than to open cases?
Usually yes. Recent listings put the cheapest Butterfly, a Safari Mesh, around $410 (see above). On Valve's odds, expected spend to unbox any Butterfly is several thousand dollars at best. Opening cases is about entertainment, not value.
Can I get a specific finish like Fade or Doppler?
Only from a case that contains it. Fade is in Breakout, and Doppler is in Spectrum and Spectrum 2. Any single named finish is very rare: about 1 in 5,000 in Breakout and roughly 1 in 11,500 in the 30-knife pools, before float and phase.
Are Butterfly Knife cases worth it?
On average, no. The expected return from items is well below the opening cost. Open them only if you enjoy the experience and can afford the spend. CSDROP is 18+, so play responsibly.
