Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) officially released on 27 September 2023 as a free upgrade to 2012's Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Your skins came with you, but the engine, smokes, netcode, maps and ranking system were rebuilt on Source 2. As of October 2026, there is no separate "CS:GO 2" to buy.
When did CS:GO become CS2, and was it a new game?
CS:GO became CS2 on 27 September 2023, as an in-place upgrade rather than a separate purchase. Existing CS:GO players received the upgrade through Steam, and new players installed Counter-Strike 2 from its store page. "CS:GO 2" was never an official name.
The rollout was gradual. Valve announced CS2 on 22 March 2023, and a beta called the Limited Test went to select CS:GO players later that day. Invitations expanded on 31 August 2023, with Prime, an active Competitive Skill Group and an eligible region as the stated criteria. What actually changed between CS:GO and CS2?
The biggest changes were the Source 2 engine, volumetric smokes, sub-tick networking and a new ranked mode. The core loop of buying, planting and defusing stayed the same.

How do volumetric smokes work?
CS2 smokes are objects in the world, not fixed spheres. They use new voxel-based volumetric smoke technology. Bullets and HE grenades can punch temporary gaps in a smoke, so spraying through one can open a sightline and reveal your position. That changes how teams use smokes, and lineups from CS:GO had to be relearned.
What is sub-tick, and is it better than 128 tick?
Sub-tick records the exact moment you act between server ticks instead of rounding the action to the next tick. Valve says that, thanks to sub-tick, the accuracy of events does not depend on the tick rate.
The caveat is that Valve's official matchmaking servers run at 64 ticks per second, so sub-tick adds precision on top of 64 updates rather than replacing them. Valve adjusted sub-tick shooting in the February 2024 update. Whether it feels better than CS:GO's 128-tick servers is still argued, so treat it as a different approach, not a clear win on every measure.
What happened to ranked play?
CS2 launched with Premier, a mode built around a visible CS Rating. Premier is strictly a Prime Status feature. Prime costs $14.99 on Steam in the US store, or you already have it if your account had Prime in CS:GO, because it carried over automatically. Your rating doesn't appear until you have won 10 Premier matches. Competitive still exists alongside Premier, now with per-map Competitive Skill Groups.
What happened to your CS:GO inventory and skins?
Every CS:GO item carried over to CS2. Nobody lost their skins, but Source 2 lights and shades items differently, so some weapons look different from CS:GO footage.
What has Valve added since launch, and what is still missing?
CS2 launched with less content than CS:GO and has been rebuilt piece by piece since. These are the milestones that matter most, as of October 2026.

A Call to Arms and the Kilowatt Case
Valve's February 2024 update brought back Arms Race, with the maps Baggage and Shoots. It also introduced CS2's first weapon case, the Kilowatt Case, with 17 community-designed finishes. Map pool changes in 2026
Anubis replaced Train in the Premier Season 4 update. Cache returned to CS2 on 28 April 2026 for Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch and Retakes, and it joined the Premier rotation in Season 5 while Overpass left Active Duty. The Rush Hour update
Rush Hour is the biggest recent change. Rush is a fast-paced queued 3v3 mode where players fight through battle arenas to reach the opponent's castle. Premier map selection also changed: Team 1 picks one map, Team 2 picks two, Team 1 picks a final map, and one of the four is chosen at random. Silent reload lets you hold the reload key to reload without the usual audio cue, at the cost of a slower reload. The full list is in Valve's Rush Hour patch notes on SteamDB.
Valve's October 2026 patches have been small follow-ups, such as clipping fixes for Rush maps, and we found no new map-pool change.
Which CS:GO modes are still missing?
Arms Race is back, and Retakes were restored in October 2025. We could not confirm that Danger Zone, Demolition or Flying Scoutsman have returned, and Valve can change the mode list in any patch. Check the Play menu for the current set.

What does the switch mean if you open CS2 cases?
The engine change did not change how cases work: you open a case and receive a random skin from its published item pool. Items from older CS:GO cases are the same items in CS2, now shown under Source 2 lighting.

Cases open from your balance, and no key is needed. Results can be checked through the provably fair system, which uses HMAC-SHA256 with a hashed server seed, your client seed and a nonce. Case opening is not a way to make money. Every case has a house edge, and you can lose your whole balance. CSDROP is for adults only (18+, or the age of majority where you live if higher) and is not affiliated with Valve or Steam. Set a budget before you start and stop when it is spent.

Is CS2 the same game as CS:GO?
It is the same series and the same Steam app lineage, but not the same game. CS2 runs on Source 2 and changes smokes, networking, maps and ranking. The core rules of bomb defusal, buy rounds and economy are familiar to CS:GO players.
Did I lose my CS:GO skins when CS2 launched?
