Every standard CS2 weapon case gives a knife or gloves 0.26% of the time, about 1 in 385 openings. Valve's rarity odds haven't changed in 2026. What did change is that since October 22, 2025, the Trade Up Contract accepts 5 Covert skins for 1 knife or gloves. Opening cases still loses money on average: trackers put the loss on a Kilowatt Case at roughly 69–73% of what you spend, as of October 2026.
What are the official CS2 case odds?
Every weapon case uses the same five-tier rarity ladder, and only the skins inside each tier change. In 2017, China's Ministry of Culture required games sold there to disclose loot box probabilities. Valve complied through its Chinese publishing partner, Perfect World, and the numbers carried over unchanged into CS2.

| Rarity | Colour | Chance per opening | Roughly 1 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mil-Spec | Blue | 79.92% | 1.25 |
| Restricted | Purple | 15.98% | 6 |
| Classified | Pink | 3.20% | 31 |
| Covert | Red | 0.64% | 156 |
| Rare Special (knife or gloves) | Gold | 0.26% | 385 |
The first four tiers each step down by a factor of five. The gold tier is only about 2.5 times rarer than Covert. In a knife case the gold slot holds knives, and in a glove case it holds gloves.
These are rounded figures. Perfect World's original disclosure carries an extra digit: 79.923%, 15.985%, 3.197%, 0.639% and 0.256%. At 0.256% the gold tier is closer to 1 in 390, so treat 385 as a convenient average.
Note: These are Valve's odds for weapon cases opened with a Steam key. Sticker capsules and souvenir packages run on their own rarity ladders and rates. CSDROP is not affiliated with Valve, so don't assume this table applies to its cases. Each case on CSDROP shows its item pool and drop rates on its own page before you open.
What changed for knives and gloves since 2025?
The case odds are untouched, but you no longer need a case to get a gold item. In the October 22, 2025 update, Valve extended the Trade Up Contract, and HLTV's coverage of the patch notes lays out the rules. 5 StatTrak™ Covert items can be exchanged for one StatTrak™ Knife. 5 regular Covert items can be exchanged for one regular Knife or one regular Gloves item. In both cases the result comes from a collection of one of the items you provided.

| Route | What you pay | What decides the result | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open a case | Key plus case | The 0.26% gold roll | Negative expected return |
| Trade-up (5 Covert) | Five Covert skins | Which collections you feed in | Covert skins can be pricey |
| Buy the skin | The market price of that exact item | Nothing, you choose | You pay a known price, fees included |
The update also moved prices. Covert demand rose because the contract consumes them, and knife and glove prices came under pressure. Check live prices before assuming either route is cheaper.
How many cases does it take to get a knife or gloves?
On average about 385, but averages mislead. Each opening is independent, so the chance of at least one gold item after n openings is 1 − 0.9974^n. Half of openers see one by about opening 267, and some go past 1,000 without one.
| Openings | Chance of at least one gold item | Approx. spend at $2.58 per opening |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 12.2% | $129 |
| 100 | 22.9% | $258 |
| 267 | 50.1% | $689 |
| 385 | 63.3% | $993 |
| 500 | 72.8% | $1,290 |
| 1,000 | 92.6% | $2,580 |
Even after 500 openings there is a 27.2% chance of zero gold items. The $2.58 figure is a Kilowatt Case plus a key as of late October 2026, so your own cost will vary by case and region.
There is no pity timer. A dry streak does not improve your next roll.
A gold item is also not the knife you want. The Kilowatt Case holds 13 Kukri Knife finishes, which drop 0.26% of the time in total. Assuming an even split, that is 0.02% for any specific one, about 1 in 5,000. If you are hunting a particular knife, browse the knife cases and check each case page's item pool.
How does StatTrak change the odds?
StatTrak is a second roll on top of the rarity roll. About 10% of eligible drops are StatTrak, and this applies equally across rarity tiers. Multiply the two chances to get the StatTrak odds:
| Tier | Any version | StatTrak version | Roughly 1 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mil-Spec | 79.92% | 7.99% | 12.5 |
| Restricted | 15.98% | 1.60% | 62.5 |
| Classified | 3.20% | 0.32% | 313 |
| Covert | 0.64% | 0.064% | 1,563 |
| Knife | 0.26% | 0.026% | 3,850 |
- At about $2.58 per opening, 3,850 openings is roughly $9,900 in keys and cases for one statistically expected StatTrak knife.
- Gloves don't exist in StatTrak, so a glove case has no StatTrak gold drop.
What does a case really cost, and what do you get back?
The key is almost the whole cost. A CS2 key costs $2.49 in the in-game store, and keys bought since October 2019 can't be traded or sold. Newer cases often sell for pennies, so a Kilowatt Case opening costs about $2.58 in total.
Expected return is the average value of a drop divided by the cost to open. Three trackers give slightly different pictures, because they price items from different markets at different times:
| Tracker | Cost to open | Avg value of a drop | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| SteamAnalyst (late Oct 2026) | $2.58 | $0.72 | about 28% |
| SteamDB (older snapshot) | $2.64 | $0.815 | about 31% |
| cs2.io (Sept 2026 snapshot) | $2.58 | $0.704 | about 27% |
Prices move daily, so treat these as snapshots. Every tracker we checked shows a return far below what you pay.
A cheap case isn't a cheap bet. The key is fixed, so even a case that costs cents still costs about $2.50 to open. Compare return rates, not ticket prices.
If you sell what you open on Steam, you lose about 15%: a 5% Steam transaction fee plus a 10% CS2 game fee. The proceeds land in your Steam Wallet as credit, not cash.
Can you improve your odds or spend less per knife?
You can't change the odds, only what you spend and how you spend it.
- Buy the skin if you want one specific item. A case is a gamble on a whole pool, while a direct purchase costs a known price.
- Set a budget before you start. Use the cumulative table above to see how long a dry streak can run.
- Treat drops as entertainment. No case has a positive expected value, so plan on getting back well under what you spent.
- Check the case page first. On CSDROP, cases open from your balance with no key needed, and each case page lists its item pool and drop rates before you open.
- Know what provably fair covers. CSDROP generates case openings and games with HMAC-SHA256 from a server seed (shown hashed before play), your client seed and a nonce, and you can verify results from your game history. The provably fair page explains the method. It proves a result wasn't altered. It does not remove the house edge.
New CSDROP accounts get free cases with no deposit, though you may first need to verify your email or link Discord or Steam. Daily free cases come with level, deposit and wager conditions. The free case page has the current details.
Key takeaway: The 0.26% odds are fixed and public. A Steam-opened case has a negative expected return, mostly because of the $2.49 key. Opening cases is paid entertainment, not an investment.
CSDROP is for adults only (18+, or the age of majority in your country if higher). Spend only what you can afford to lose, set limits, and stop if it stops being fun. If gambling is causing you harm, contact a local support service.
FAQ
What are the odds of getting a knife in a CS2 case?
It is 0.26%, about 1 in 385, for a knife or gloves from any standard weapon case. The chance of one specific knife finish is much lower, because the gold slot is split across many items. Each opening is independent, so a dry streak doesn't raise the next roll.
Did Valve change CS2 case odds in 2026?
No. The five-tier odds match the 2017 disclosure and have carried over unchanged. The big change came on October 22, 2025, when Trade Up Contracts began accepting five Covert skins for a knife or gloves.
Is the odds table the same for every case?
Yes, for standard Valve weapon cases: a Kilowatt Case and an older case share the same percentages, and only the skins differ. Sticker capsules and souvenir packages use separate rates. Cases on other sites, CSDROP included, are separate products, so read the drop rates on the case page.
What is the StatTrak chance on a case drop?
About 10% of eligible drops are StatTrak. For a knife that works out to 0.026%, around 1 in 3,850 openings. Gloves can't be StatTrak.
How much does it cost on average to unbox a knife?
At the 1-in-385 average and about $2.58 per Kilowatt Case opening, roughly $1,000 as of late October 2026. That is an average, not a promise: you may hit gold on the first opening or never. A knife you buy directly has a fixed, known price.
Is it better to trade up for a knife than to open cases?
It depends on what five Covert skins cost against the knife you could get from that collection. Both routes carry costs and risk, and prices shifted sharply after the October 2025 update. Compare live prices before you commit, and never assume a profit.
